Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone is one of the best-selling books in publishing history. It was written by J.K. Rowling when she was only twenty-three years old, when her mother died after battling Multiple Sclerosis for seven years before she passed away at age 44. The book topped the charts not only in Canada but also in the United Kingdom and Australia, and it has cemented its place in pop culture today, with over 400 million copies sold to date across all formats worldwide. Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone earned Rowling a lot of money from the day it was released, but her publisher, Bloomsbury, didn't see any profits from the book. In fact, Bloomsbury barely made a profit from publishing the book. While Rowling was working on the next installment in the series, Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets, she decided that she wanted to have a substantial amount for herself from both writing and from movie rights that were being sold before she even wrote a word of the script for Half-Blood Prince. Rowling decided that she wanted to pull out of the contract she had signed with Bloomsbury, but her publisher wouldn't allow her to. So, Rowling started looking for financial support, and she eventually found it by launching the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA), which was dedicated to both reaching out to fans around the world and helping fellow authors. As time went on, Rowling became one of the most highly regarded authors in the world for both writing and activism. She started donating money from her book sales to charities like Comic Relief and Doctors Without Borders. And the supporters of the Harry Potter Alliance quickly grew to almost 1 million members worldwide. But still, Rowling wasn't satisfied. She wanted her books to be offered to people online through Amazon, and she wanted to get rid of Bloomsbury because she did not feel that they were doing enough for her. Furthermore, Rowling did not like how Bloomsbury treated the Harry Potter series like a paperback. So in 2006, when Rowling's contract with Bloomsbury was coming up for renewal for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Rowling decided that she would set up her own company called Pottermore Limited. J.K. Rowling is the main shareholder. Pottermore Limited allows Rowling to keep 100 percent of her profits from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but she also gives 10 percent of her profits to charity, something that Bloomsbury had not done for years. Because Rowling had control over what happened with the Harry Potter books, she was able to make sure that most of her profits would go to charity. Bloomsbury is still Rowling's official publisher in the United Kingdom, but they do not offer any kind of financial support or compensation to J.K. Rowling.
